Caged

Spanning photography, painting, and textile work, this series draws upon Peter Singer’s declaration that “all animals are equal,” using the framework of animal liberation to confront and critique the prevalent mistreatment of Companion animals (specifically cats and dogs) within contemporary Chinese society.
Inspired by the ubiquitous stacked, scattered and in-use cages used for restraining animals that the artist observed during a visit to an animal shelter in Chongqing, China, the element 'cage' is used in this piece to implicate human behavior.
By incorporating metaphor-laden materials such as dog hair, human hair, and metal, this series works explores how textile can be combined with different mediums as an activist strategy to stir the viewer's understanding of speciesism and consider their own roles in this issue.
